Chubu District is the central part of the Honshu Island in Japan. "Chu-" means "Central", and "-bu" means "part". Usually, this area is consist of 9 prefectures :Niigata, Toyama, Ishikawa, Fukui, Yamanashi, Nagano, Gifu, Shizuoka and Aichi. (Nagano ciy is the place of the Winter Olympic Games 1998. "Naga-" means "long", and "-no" means "field".)
In the case of rowing racing block (for example of the qualification regatta for the Kokutai (National Athletic Games), there is another dividing system. The Hokushin-etsu block (Northern area) means Niigata, Nagano, Toyama, Ishikawa and Fukui, and the Tokai block (Southern area) means Shizuoka, Aichi, Gifu and Mie. Yamanashi prefecture is included in the Kanto-block. Mie prefecture is usually included in the Kansai (Kinki) district.
